Briscoe Mounds
Location: Front Street, Channahon, IL (I-55 Bluff Road exit, then south
via the frontage road towards Channahon)

prehistoric mound and village site, situated along the western side of the Des
Plaines River, is affiliated with the Langford tradition of the Upper
Mississippian, dating to around A.D. 1200-1500. Preservation of the site, owned

Archaeological investigations at this important industrial site,
acquired by the Forest Preserve District of Will County in the 1990s,
showed that the foundations of the 19th-century blast furnaces and
related facilities are still present. This site has a 1 mile self guided
tour through exhibits explaining the iron making process and the people
who worked there. It is also the access point for the 11.4 mile I & M
Canal Trail.

the Illinois State Museum will present a lecture entitled:
"Archaeological Investigations at New Philadelphia, a Multi-Racial
Agricultural Community in West Central Illinois." Beginning in the
summer of 2002, the University of Maryland in cooperation with the
University of Illinois, the Illinois State Museum, the University of
Central Florida, and the New Philadelphia Association embarked on a
long-term project to locate, document, and study the growth and eventual
demise of a town once known as New Philadelphia, Illinois. New
Philadelphia is the earliest known town founded and registered in the
state by an African American in the antebellum United States. This event
is free and open to the public and is part of the Mound City Archaeology
Lecture Series co-sponsored by the Mound City Archaeological Society.
